Profile and History of the Mary Mother of Compassion Parish.
The Parish came into existence in the year 2011 when the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales Guwahati Province were invited by the Most Rev. Victor Lyngdoh DD the then Bishop of Nongstoin Diocese to start their Renewal ministry. The foundation process for erecting the Holy Renewal Centre in Mawkhlam village of Nongstoin Parish started in the year 2010 February and Rev. Fr. Joby Mathew MSFS came to conduct a monthly Bible Convention, coming from Hoy Renewal Centre Umroi.
In the month of April, 2011 during the Holy Week Rev. Fr. Joby Mathew MSFS came to live in the village. Thereupon, the Bishop of Nongstoin Diocese entrusted 3(three) villages that he would look after, namely, Mawkhlam, Ladnongsba and Mawkynjoiñ-Mawkynthaitniangbri. But later before the official erection as a Parish and installation of the first Parish Priest there were 5(five) other villages that belong to the Mawlangdep Parish were added, namely Riangpoit, Mawpun, Nongthymmai, Nongmynraw, and Risiang.
Mother of Compassion Parish was erected on 20 November 2011 by Most Rev. Bishop Victor Lyngdoh, Bishop of Nongstoiñ Diocese. It was carved out of Nongstoiñ Parish. It consists of eight villages, namely, Riangpoit, Mawpun, Nongthymmai, Nongmynraw, Risiang, Lad Nongsba, Mawkynjoiñ-Mawkynthaitñiangbri and Mawkhlam.
Rev. Fr. Joby Mathew, MSFS, was the first Parish Priest, who is also the Director of Holy Redeemer Retreat Centre, Mawkhlam. At the beginning he was assisted by Rev. Fr. Mathew also as an Administrator.
In 2016 the second Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Genes Shangpliang MSFS was installed and in 2019 Rev. Fr. Firstar Shylla MSFS the third Parish Priest and in December 2022 Rev Fr. Nicholas Maïong MSFS the fourth Parish.
Schools: There are 6(six) RCLP Schools and 5(five) Upper Primary Schools and 1(one) Secondary School.
The Parish currently (November 2024) has no full time Catechist. We are looking forward to have one from the Parishioners.
The lay people are grouped in associations of Seng Rangbah, Seng Kynthei, Seng Samla, Seng Khynnah, KBB, Family Cell, Catechetical cell.
Currently there are 480 Catholic families in the Parish. The people of the Parish are mostly of low income citizens with a few who are government employees and teachers.
